My current research involves the development of bio-inspired materials to improve the reliability and resilience and of engineered structures. Specifically, I am working to engender high-performance fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites with multifunctional attributes. By developing fabrication techniques that create internal microvasculature (VaSC) to allow fluid transport, in situ self-healing along with thermal regulation and electromagnetic modulation is made possible by a simple substitution of active liquids. Recently I have begun to integrate micro-electronic sensor arrays into FRC architectures in order to couple self-sensing with the various functionalities. The ultimate objective is to produce synthetic materials with life-like attributes for real-time adaptability and longevity.
